Step 1 of 3: Equipment
A large tree with its canopy bent sideways by wind stands behind a single-story red brick house with a dark shingled hip roof, under an overcast gray sky with visible rain.

Sizing a mini-split in Comal County starts with what the system will actually run against year after year. 111 severe weather events were recorded in Comal County, Texas between 2015 and 2024. At that rate, severe weather is a standing condition, and a contractor who ignores it when selecting equipment and planning the install will undersize or underspec the unit for the work it has to do. Refrigerant line routing, mounting position, and outdoor unit placement all have to hold up against a climate that pushes hard on a regular basis.

The electrical panel in a Comal County home is where a mini-split installation gets decided. Half the homes in Comal County, Texas were built in 2005 or earlier (2020-2024 ACS 5-year). A house built by then was wired for the loads its original systems demanded, and those loads do not match what a modern mini-split circuit requires. Ductwork is not part of the calculation for a split system, which is one reason homeowners choose it, but the electrical is. A contractor will open the panel before anything else gets priced.

The Parts of a Mini-Split System and What Gets Evaluated

Isometric cutaway illustration of a gray house showing two wall-mounted indoor air conditioning units in separate rooms with furniture, connected by line sets to an outdoor condenser unit on a pad outside.

The indoor air handler mounts high on an interior wall inside the room being conditioned. It is the piece the homeowner sees every day, and it is where conditioned air enters the living space. The outdoor condenser unit sits outside the house, usually on a pad or bracket along an exterior wall, and carries the components that drive the whole system.

A refrigerant line set runs through a small penetration in the wall, connecting the indoor and outdoor units. Most systems also include a condensate drain line that carries moisture away from the indoor handler, and a dedicated electrical disconnect mounted near the outdoor unit to allow safe service access.

The drawing shows a typical layout, and a licensed contractor determines what applies to the specific configuration of your home.
