Step 1 of 3: Equipment

A contractor quoting a mini-split installation in Bexar County has to size the system for what the climate actually asks of it, not for a median day. 387 severe weather events were recorded in Bexar County, Texas between 2015 and 2024. At that rate, severe weather is part of the normal workload a system runs against, which means an undersized unit does not just fall short on the worst days. It works harder on ordinary ones too. A contractor who accounts for that load upfront picks equipment and sets refrigerant charge for the conditions that will repeat, not for conditions that might.

The electrical service in a house built for older equipment may not match what a new mini-split draws, and in Bexar County's housing stock that gap is common enough to shape how an installation quote is structured. Half the homes in Bexar County, Texas were built in 1990 or earlier (2020-2024 ACS 5-year). A contractor sizing a new system here checks the panel before committing to a scope, because the breaker capacity already in the house determines whether the installation is straightforward or whether the electrical work runs ahead of it.

The Mini-split Parts That Come With an HVAC Installation

Isometric cutaway illustration of a small gray house showing two rooms, one with a sofa and one with a bed, each with a wall-mounted indoor air conditioning unit connected by line sets to an outdoor condenser unit on the ground outside.

The indoor air handler mounts high on a wall inside the room being conditioned. It holds the evaporator coil and the blower that moves conditioned air into the space. Outside the house, the condenser unit sits on a pad or bracket and houses the compressor and the coil that faces the open air.

A refrigerant line set runs between the two units through a small opening in the wall, carrying the refrigerant that makes the exchange possible. A condensate drain line also exits the indoor unit, routing moisture out of the house. Some installations add a disconnect box near the outdoor unit where the electrical supply to that unit can be shut off.

The drawing shows the general layout of these components, and a licensed contractor determines exactly how they apply to your home.

Severe Weather Events in Bexar County

Bexar County's climate puts real demands on heating and cooling equipment, and those demands are shaped in part by how often extreme conditions hit. A mini-split sized and installed for local conditions handles that load differently than one spec'd for somewhere else.
