A contractor quoting a mini-split installation in Blanco County has to work out what is driving the system's load before sizing means anything. 59 severe weather events were recorded in Blanco County, Texas between 2015 and 2024. At that rate, severe weather here is something a system encounters now and then, not a condition it runs against continuously. That changes what the install has to account for. Refrigerant line placement, unit siting, and insulation quality in the conditioned space carry more weight in the outcome than bracing against an extreme environment, because the environment here does not consistently push a system to its limits.

Electrical panels in older housing stock were sized for what was standard at the time of construction, and mini-splits draw differently than what those circuits were built around. Half the homes in Blanco County, Texas were built in 1998 or earlier (2020-2024 ACS 5-year). A contractor pricing a mini-split installation here opens the panel before quoting the equipment, because a service that cannot support the new load requires its own work first. The ductwork question does not apply to a mini-split, but the electrical one does, and in stock of this age it is the variable that determines whether the install is straightforward or carries a second scope.

The Parts of a Mini-Split System and What HVAC Installation Involves

Illustrated cutaway of a two-room house showing two wall-mounted indoor air conditioning units connected by pipes to an outdoor condenser unit on the ground outside.

The indoor air handler mounts high on a wall inside the room and delivers conditioned air directly into that space. The outdoor condenser unit sits outside the home, usually at ground level or on a bracket, and houses the compressor and coil that do the heavy lifting. Together these two units form the core of what a contractor installs.

A refrigerant line set runs through a small opening in the wall to connect the indoor and outdoor units, carrying the refrigerant between them. A condensate drain line runs from the indoor head to the outside, removing moisture the unit pulls from the air. A disconnect box mounts near the outdoor unit and gives the system its dedicated power shutoff.

The drawing shows a typical layout, and a licensed contractor determines exactly how each piece applies to your specific home.

Weather swings put real demand on heating and cooling equipment, and that demand is shaped by local conditions. A mini-split sized and installed for what Blanco County actually sees will handle the load better than one spec'd to a generic standard.
