Sizing a mini-split for Duval County starts with what the equipment will actually run against, and that picture is quieter than homeowners often expect. 38 severe weather events were recorded in Duval County, Texas between 2015 and 2024. At that rate, severe weather is an event here, not a constant condition, which means a system that is struggling has likely been undone by installation quality or age rather than by the climate. A contractor quoting a new install still has to account for local heat loads, but the weather record gives them room to focus on the unit itself.

Interior of a garage with concrete block walls and a closed sectional door, showing large sheet-metal rectangular and round ductwork running along the exposed wood joist ceiling, with an aluminum step ladder and a large paper bag on the floor.

Electrical service in a house this old was sized for what people ran then, and a mini-split's dedicated circuit requirements are a different calculation entirely. Half the homes in Duval County, Texas were built in 1980 or earlier (2020-2024 ACS 5-year). A contractor quoting the job has to open the panel and read what is actually there before the equipment price means anything. Ductwork is not in the picture for a mini-split, so the electrical is where the real variable lives, and it either supports the install or it does not.

The Parts of a Mini-Split System and What HVAC Installation Covers

Isometric grey illustration of a cutaway house showing two rooms with wall-mounted indoor air conditioning units connected by lines to an outdoor condenser unit beside the building.

The indoor air handler mounts high on a wall inside the room being served, which is where conditioned air enters the living space. Outside the house, the condenser unit sits on a pad or bracket and houses the compressor and fan. These two units are the core of what a mini-split installation puts in place.

A refrigerant line set runs through a small opening in the wall to connect the indoor and outdoor units, carrying the refrigerant between them. A condensate drain line also runs from the air handler to move moisture out of the house. A dedicated electrical disconnect or disconnect box is mounted near the outdoor unit as part of the installation.

The drawing shows a typical layout, and a licensed contractor determines what applies to your specific home.
