A mini-split going into La Salle County carries a real but modest weather load, and a contractor quoting or sizing a replacement has to account for that honestly. 40 severe weather events were recorded in La Salle County, Texas between 2015 and 2024. At that rate, severe weather is an event here, not a standing operating condition, which means worn mounts, a poorly routed line set, or an undersized unit for the floor plan will do more damage to a system's working life than the weather will. A contractor scoping an installation here looks hard at what the previous install got wrong before the equipment choice enters the conversation.

Electrical service in much of this county's housing stock was sized for equipment that came before modern mini-splits existed. Half the homes in La Salle County, Texas were built in 1984 or earlier (2020-2024 ACS 5-year). A contractor installing a mini-split today will open the panel before they price the job, because a unit drawing what current systems draw can exceed what older residential wiring was laid to handle. The ductwork question is beside the point for a ductless system, but the electrical question is live on a large share of jobs here.

The Parts of a Mini-Split System Involved in an HVAC Installation

Isometric illustration of a cutaway gray house with a dark shingled roof, showing two wall-mounted indoor air conditioning units connected by piping to an outdoor condenser unit on the ground outside.

The indoor air handler mounts high on a wall inside the room being conditioned. It holds the evaporator coil and the fan that moves air across it. The outdoor condenser unit sits on a pad or bracket outside the house and carries the compressor, which is the heart of the system.

A refrigerant line set runs between the two units through a small hole in the wall, carrying refrigerant back and forth. A condensate drain line exits the indoor unit and routes moisture outside. The outdoor unit also connects to a dedicated electrical disconnect mounted nearby on the exterior wall.

The drawing shows the general layout of a mini-split system, and a licensed contractor determines exactly how each piece applies to your specific home.
