Step 1 of 3: Equipment
A black mailbox with a red flag on a weathered wooden post stands in a grassy yard during rain, in front of a single-story brick house with a dark shingle roof and tall pine trees behind it.

A contractor quoting a mini-split installation in Kerr County has to treat sizing as a load question before it becomes a product question. 105 severe weather events were recorded in Kerr County, Texas between 2015 and 2024. At that rate, severe weather is a standing condition of operating here, not an occasional disruption, and a unit sized for a milder assumption will run short against it. The refrigerant capacity, the placement of the outdoor head, and how the line set is run all get decided against what this area actually asks of the equipment.

The electrical panel in much of this county's housing was sized for a different era of equipment, and what a mini-split draws now does not always match what the service was built to handle. Half the homes in Kerr County, Texas were built in 1987 or earlier (2020-2024 ACS 5-year). A contractor quoting an install here checks the panel before anything else, because a house whose wiring dates to that period often needs a circuit added or a breaker replaced before the new unit can run. The ductwork question is separate from all of this; mini-splits sidestep it. But the electrical is where the scope of the job gets set.

The Parts of a Mini-Split System and What HVAC Installation Covers

Isometric cutaway illustration of a small house showing two wall-mounted indoor air conditioning units connected by line sets to an outdoor condenser unit beside the exterior wall, with a sofa in one room and a bed in another.

The indoor air handler mounts high on an interior wall and delivers conditioned air directly into the room. The outdoor condenser unit sits outside the house, usually on a pad or bracket at ground level or on an exterior wall, and houses the compressor and coil that drive the whole system.

A refrigerant line set runs through a small hole in the wall to connect the two units, and a condensate drain line carries moisture out of the indoor unit. A dedicated electrical disconnect is mounted near the outdoor unit to give a contractor safe shutoff access.

The drawing shows a typical layout, and a licensed contractor will determine what applies to your specific home and installation.
