A single-story red brick house with black shutters, a dark garage door and low shrubs, seen during rain with water streaming off the roof edge and pooling on the wet concrete driveway, with a large tree at right under an overcast sky.

A contractor quoting a mini-split install in Kent County is not working around a punishing local weather load. 55 severe weather events were recorded in Kent County, Texas between 2015 and 2024. At that rate, severe weather is an occasional event rather than a steady operating condition, and it does not drive the sizing decisions the way it would elsewhere. What drives them here is the structure itself: the room volumes, the insulation, the orientation, and what the previous system was asked to do. A contractor who gets those right produces an install that performs; one who skips them produces a system that runs hard and quits early.

Interior of a garage with concrete block walls and a closed sectional door, showing large sheet-metal rectangular and round ductwork running along the exposed wood joist ceiling, with an aluminum step ladder and a large paper bag on the floor.

Ductwork is not the question on a mini-split job, because a mini-split brings its own delivery system. The question is what the electrical service was sized for when the house was built. Half the homes in Kent County, Texas were built in 1973 or earlier (2020-2024 ACS 5-year). A panel from that era was specced for the loads of that era, and a contractor quoting an installation has to open the box and read what is actually there before the quote is real. If the service is short, the panel work becomes part of the job.

The Mini-split Parts That Come With an HVAC Installation

Isometric illustration of a cutaway house interior showing two wall-mounted indoor air conditioning units connected by line sets to an outdoor condenser unit beside the exterior wall.

The indoor air handler mounts high on an interior wall, usually in the room being conditioned, and delivers conditioned air directly into that space. The outdoor condenser unit sits on the ground or a bracket outside the home and houses the compressor, which does the heaviest mechanical work in the system.

A refrigerant line set runs through a small hole in the wall to connect the two units, carrying refrigerant between them. A condensate drain line runs from the indoor unit to the outside, removing moisture the air handler pulls from the air. A dedicated power connection ties into the system at the outdoor unit.

The drawing shows a typical layout, and a licensed contractor determines exactly how each piece applies to your home.
