A mini-split struggling in Brooks County is more likely failing from age or a poor original install than from weather wear. 11 severe weather events were recorded in Brooks County, Texas between 2015 and 2024. At that rate, severe weather is an occasional event for equipment here, not a standing condition it battles through every season. A contractor checking a refrigerant line or a failing capacitor is not chasing storm damage as the first explanation. They are looking at how long the unit has run, how well the original work was done, and whether it has had any service since. Those are the factors that decide the repair scope.

Much of the housing here was wired and plumbed for equipment that predates mini-splits by a generation or more, and the systems running in those houses today often carry the marks of that history. Half the homes in Brooks County, Texas were built in 1970 or earlier (2020-2024 ACS 5-year). When a mini-split in stock like this needs repair, what the opened unit shows tends to be shaped by how it was installed into a house that was not built for it: stressed connections, inadequate drainage paths, or refrigerant lines run in compromises. The part a contractor orders is the smaller question. What they find around it sets the scope.

The Parts of a Mini-split a Contractor Checks During Repair

Isometric cutaway illustration of a small house with a dark shingled roof, showing two wall-mounted indoor units connected by lines running to an outdoor condenser unit beside the building.

The indoor air handler is the piece most homeowners notice first. It mounts high on an interior wall and pushes conditioned air into the room. When a room stops cooling or heating, the air handler is where a contractor starts: its fan motor, its coil, and its sensors are all common fault points.

Outside, the condenser unit houses the compressor and the outdoor coil. A refrigerant line set and a control wire run between the two units, bundled together along the exterior wall. A fault anywhere along that line set, or inside the condenser itself, shows up as a system that runs but delivers nothing.

The drawing shows the general layout of a mini-split system, and a licensed contractor determines which components are relevant to the specific conditions in your home.
