Step 1 of 3: Equipment
A single-story red brick house with a gray shingled roof and attached garage, with trimmed shrubs along the front, a large tree at left, and a wet driveway under an overcast sky during rain.

A contractor sizing and quoting a mini-split installation in Refugio County has to account for what the local climate actually demands, and the weather record here is lighter than many assume. 38 severe weather events were recorded in Refugio County, Texas between 2015 and 2024. At that rate, severe weather is something a system encounters now and then, not a sustained grind on its components. That matters for installation because the sizing decision and equipment selection are driven more by the heat and humidity of a Gulf Coast summer than by storm frequency. A contractor who knows this area specs the unit for the cooling load, not for a weather burden the numbers do not support.

Electrical panels in housing stock this old were sized for loads that predate modern mini-split equipment, and what a contractor finds at the panel often decides whether the job goes straight or picks up an upgrade first. Half the homes in Refugio County, Texas were built in 1973 or earlier (2020-2024 ACS 5-year). A mini-split draw is not what those original circuits were designed to carry, so the panel assessment comes before the equipment quote, not after it.

The Parts of a Mini-Split System and What They Do

Isometric illustration of a cutaway house showing two wall-mounted indoor air conditioning units connected by line sets to an outdoor condenser unit, with a sofa and table inside the room.

The indoor air handler mounts high on an interior wall, inside the room being conditioned. It pulls room air across a coil and moves treated air back into the space. The outdoor unit sits on a pad or bracket outside the house and carries the compressor and condenser coil that do the heavy lifting.

A refrigerant line set runs through a small hole in the wall to connect the two units, carrying refrigerant between them. A condensate drain line runs from the indoor unit to move moisture out of the house, and a power line feeds the outdoor unit from a dedicated circuit.

The drawing beside this text shows the general layout of these components, and a licensed contractor determines exactly how each one applies to your home.

Severe Weather Events in Refugio County

Weather puts a direct load on heating and cooling equipment, and that load varies by where you live. A mini-split sized and installed for local conditions handles what the climate actually delivers, which is why weather history is part of the picture for any installation in this area.
