Sizing a mini-split in Gregg County means accounting for what the system will run against, not just what the catalog recommends for the square footage. 105 severe weather events were recorded in Gregg County, Texas between 2015 and 2024. At that rate, severe weather is a standing feature of the climate here, and a contractor has to treat it as a baseline load when selecting equipment and designing the install. A unit that fits a gentler environment may be undersized the first summer it runs.

The electrical panel a house was built with tells a contractor more about what a mini-split installation will cost than the wall space does. Half the homes in Gregg County, Texas were built in 1980 or earlier (2020-2024 ACS 5-year). Houses built around that period were typically wired for window units or older central systems, and the panel that served those loads often has to be evaluated before a circuit for a mini-split can be added. A contractor quoting the job will open the panel early, not as a formality, but because what it contains sets the scope.

The Parts of a Mini-Split System and Where Each One Goes

Isometric cutaway illustration of a small house with a shingled gable roof, showing two wall-mounted indoor air conditioning units connected by refrigerant lines to an outdoor condenser unit on the ground outside.

The indoor air handler mounts high on a wall inside the room being conditioned. It draws in room air, passes it across the coil inside the unit, and pushes treated air back out. Most homeowners notice it first because it is the piece they live with every day.

The outdoor unit sits on a pad or bracket outside the house and holds the compressor and the condenser coil. A refrigerant line set runs through a small hole in the wall to connect the two units, and a condensate drain line carries moisture away from the indoor handler to the outside.

The drawing shows a typical layout, and a licensed contractor determines exactly how each piece applies to your home.
