Step 1 of 3: Equipment
A large tree bends heavily to one side in wind and rain above a single-story brick house with a shingled roof and shrubs along the front, under an overcast gray sky.

A contractor quoting a mini-split install in El Paso County is not just picking a unit off a spec sheet. 133 severe weather events were recorded in El Paso County, Texas between 2015 and 2024. At that rate, severe weather is part of the normal working life of any system placed here, which means placement, line-set routing, and outdoor unit protection all carry real weight in how the job gets designed. A system sized and installed without accounting for that load will be asked to perform under conditions it was never set up to handle.

Electrical service sized for older equipment is where mini-split installations in El Paso County regularly run into a hard stop. Half the homes in El Paso County, Texas were built in 1988 or earlier (2020-2024 ACS 5-year). A house built then was wired for the loads of that era, and what a mini-split draws is a different number than what the original panel was designed to handle. A contractor pricing the job has to look at the panel and the existing service before the quote means anything.

The Parts of a Mini-Split System and What Gets Installed

Isometric illustration of a cutaway gray house with a dark shingled roof, showing two wall-mounted indoor air handlers connected by line sets to an outdoor condenser unit on a pad outside.

The indoor air handler mounts high on a wall inside the room being conditioned, where it draws in room air and delivers conditioned air back out. The outdoor unit sits on the ground or a bracket outside the house and houses the compressor and condenser coil, doing the heavy mechanical work of the system.

A refrigerant line set runs through a small penetration in the wall to connect the two units, carrying refrigerant between them. A condensate drain line runs from the indoor head to the outside, moving moisture pulled from the room air away from the unit and the wall.

The drawing shows a typical layout, and a licensed contractor determines exactly how each piece is positioned and routed for your specific home.
