Step 1 of 3: Equipment
A single-story red brick house with a gray shingled roof and a two-car garage with a white door, seen during rainfall with a wet concrete driveway, trimmed hedges, a lawn, a large tree and a wooden fence at left under an overcast sky.

Sizing a mini-split for this area starts with what the climate actually demands of the equipment year-round, not just on the worst days. 33 severe weather events were recorded in Wharton County, Texas between 2015 and 2024. At that rate, severe weather is an event here, not a condition a system is constantly running against. A contractor quoting a new install will look hard at load calculations, placement, and line-set routing, because those choices determine how well the unit holds temperature on a normal summer afternoon. Poor sizing or a rushed install creates performance problems that no amount of good weather makes up for.

The electrical panel is where a mini-split installation in Wharton County gets decided. Half the homes in Wharton County, Texas were built in 1980 or earlier (2020-2024 ACS 5-year). A house built in that era was wired for the loads of its time, and a mini-split draws differently from whatever the original service was planned around. A licensed contractor will pull the panel cover and read what is actually there before any equipment gets ordered.

The Mini-split Components a Contractor Accounts for During Installation

Isometric line illustration of a cutaway house with two rooms, each with a wall-mounted indoor air conditioning unit connected by lines to an outdoor condenser unit on the ground outside.

The indoor air handler mounts high on an interior wall in the room being conditioned, which is where most homeowners notice the system first. The outdoor condenser unit sits outside the home on a pad or bracket, housing the compressor and the components that do the heavy mechanical work. Each unit serves its space directly.

A refrigerant line set runs through a small penetration in the wall, connecting the indoor and outdoor units and carrying the working fluid between them. A condensate drain line runs alongside it, routing moisture out of the indoor unit. The outdoor unit also connects to a dedicated electrical disconnect mounted near it on the exterior wall.

The drawing shows a typical layout, and a licensed contractor determines exactly how each component is positioned and routed for your specific home.
