Step 1 of 3: Equipment
A black metal mailbox on a weathered wooden post stands in a grassy yard during rain, with a single-story brick house and tall pine trees behind it under a gray sky.

Sizing a mini-split for a home in Yoakum County starts with the structure itself: the square footage, the insulation, the orientation of the rooms. 71 severe weather events were recorded in Yoakum County, Texas between 2015 and 2024. At that rate, severe weather is an occasional fact of life here, not a standing operating condition, so a contractor quotes and sizes around the building rather than around storm exposure. A system that fails here almost certainly failed because of age, a poor original install, or deferred service. The weather record gives a contractor little to work around when they plan the job.

Interior of a garage with concrete block walls and a closed sectional door, showing exposed galvanized sheet-metal ductwork and round ducts mounted under the wood joist ceiling, with a step ladder and a white bag on the floor.

Electrical panels in houses this old were sized for what those houses ran at the time they were built, and a mini-split draws differently than what the original service was designed to handle. Half the homes in Yoakum County, Texas were built in 1977 or earlier (2020-2024 ACS 5-year). A licensed contractor pricing an installation here pulls the panel before quoting, because the wiring question often sets the budget more than the equipment does. Ductwork is beside the point for a mini-split, but the electrical is not.

The Parts of a Mini-Split System and What HVAC Installation Covers

Isometric illustration of a cutaway single-story house showing two wall-mounted mini-split indoor units connected by line sets to an outdoor condenser beside the building, with a sofa, table and chairs inside.

The indoor air handler mounts high on a wall inside the room being conditioned. It pulls air across its coil and returns treated air back into the space. The outdoor condenser unit sits on the ground or a bracket outside the house, housing the compressor and the components that drive the whole system.

A set of refrigerant lines runs through a small hole in the wall to connect the two units, carrying refrigerant between them. A condensate drain line runs alongside, directing moisture pulled from the indoor air to the outside. The indoor unit also draws a dedicated electrical connection to power its operation.

The drawing shows a typical layout, and a licensed contractor determines exactly how each piece applies to your home.
