Sizing a mini-split in DeWitt County starts with what the house demands, not with how rough the weather gets. 22 severe weather events were recorded in DeWitt County, Texas between 2015 and 2024. At that rate, severe weather here is an occasional event rather than a steady operating load, which means a poorly sized or sloppily installed system has no weather record to hide behind. A contractor quoting a replacement or a new install has to get the Manual J load calculation right and seal the lineset penetrations correctly, because those are the variables that decide whether the unit runs efficiently or runs hard. The climate here does not do the explaining for a system that underperforms.

Electrical service is what a contractor prices carefully in housing this old, and in DeWitt County the housing runs old. Half the homes in DeWitt County, Texas were built in 1978 or earlier (2020-2024 ACS 5-year). Wiring installed for the appliances and equipment of that era was sized to a different load profile than a mini-split draws today. A contractor who skips the panel check before quoting is guessing at a number that can move the job significantly. The ductwork question matters too, though mini-splits sidestep most of it. What does not move is the electrical.

The Parts of a Mini-split System and What Gets Installed

Illustrated cutaway of a two-room house showing two wall-mounted indoor air conditioning units connected by pipes to an outdoor condenser unit on the ground outside.

The indoor air handler mounts high on a wall inside the room being served, pulling room air across its coil and pushing conditioned air back out. The outdoor condenser unit sits outside the house, usually on a pad or bracket against an exterior wall, and houses the compressor and the main refrigerant components.

A refrigerant line set runs through a small penetration in the wall, connecting the indoor and outdoor units and carrying refrigerant between them. A condensate drain line also runs from the indoor unit to an appropriate discharge point, and a dedicated power cable ties the two units together.

The drawing shows a representative layout of these components, and a licensed contractor determines exactly where each piece belongs in your home.
