A contractor quoting a mini-split installation in Brown County starts with what the system will actually run against. 155 severe weather events were recorded in Brown County, Texas between 2015 and 2024. At that rate, severe weather is a standing condition here, and the sizing decisions a contractor makes reflect that. A unit undersized for what this area regularly delivers will work harder than it was built to, and the quality of the install matters just as much as the equipment chosen.

The electrical panel in a house built for mid-century equipment was not sized with a modern mini-split's draw in mind. Half the homes in Brown County, Texas were built in 1978 or earlier (2020-2024 ACS 5-year). A contractor quoting an installation in this county has to open the panel box and determine whether the existing service will carry the new load, or whether that work has to come first. Ductwork is not the question with a mini-split, but the electrical is, and in housing stock this age it is where the job's scope gets decided.

The Parts of a Mini-Split System and What Gets Installed

Isometric illustration of a cutaway house with a dark tiled gable roof, showing two wall-mounted indoor split air conditioning units connected by lines to an outdoor condenser unit on the ground outside.

The indoor air handler mounts high on a wall inside the room being conditioned. It delivers conditioned air directly into that space. Outside the house, the outdoor compressor unit sits on a pad or bracket and houses the components that drive the whole system.

A set of refrigerant lines runs through a small opening in the wall to connect the indoor and outdoor units. A condensate drain line runs from the air handler to carry away moisture, and a dedicated electrical line feeds the outdoor unit from the panel.

The drawing shows a typical layout, and a licensed contractor determines exactly how the system fits the conditions in your home.

Severe Weather Events in Brown County

Weather shapes how hard heating and cooling equipment has to work, and in Brown County that workload is set by local conditions, not regional averages. A mini-split sized and installed for what this area actually throws at it will perform differently than one spec'd from a national chart.
