Sizing a mini-split in Jefferson County starts with what the system will actually run against, not what a spec sheet suggests for a generic Texas address. 93 severe weather events were recorded in Jefferson County, Texas between 2015 and 2024. At that rate, severe weather is a standing condition here, and a contractor has to account for it before committing to a unit size, refrigerant line length, or mount location. A system underspecified for that load will cycle hard and recover slowly. Getting the install right means a contractor treats every one of those variables as a local question first.

Electrical service is what decides how a mini-split job goes in Jefferson County. Half the homes in Jefferson County, Texas were built in 1978 or earlier (2020-2024 ACS 5-year). Wiring put in for the appliances and load assumptions of that era was not sized with a modern mini-split circuit in mind, and a contractor pulling the panel cover is the one who finds out whether it is adequate or not. Ductwork is not part of a mini-split installation, so the house itself narrows to one question: what the electrical service will carry.

The Parts of a Mini-Split System and What Gets Installed

Isometric illustration of a cutaway house showing two wall-mounted indoor air conditioning units connected by line sets to an outdoor condenser unit on the ground outside.

The indoor air handler mounts high on a wall inside the room being served. It holds the evaporator coil and a blower that moves conditioned air into the space. The outdoor condenser unit sits on a pad or bracket outside the house and carries the compressor, the condenser coil, and the fan that rejects heat to the exterior.

A refrigerant line set runs between the two units through a small opening in the wall, carrying the refrigerant that links the indoor and outdoor sides. A condensate drain line runs from the air handler to an appropriate discharge point, and a dedicated electrical circuit feeds the outdoor unit.

The drawing shows a typical layout; a licensed contractor determines exactly how each piece is positioned and routed in your home.

Severe Weather Events in Jefferson County

Weather patterns shape how hard heating and cooling equipment has to work year after year. A mini-split sized and installed for local conditions holds up better than one spec'd without that picture in mind.
