Sizing a mini-split in Andrews County starts with the building, not the forecast. 63 severe weather events were recorded in Andrews County, Texas between 2015 and 2024. At that rate, severe weather is an occasional fact of life here, and a contractor cannot use it to justify oversizing a unit or padding a quote. What drives the right equipment choice is the house: its insulation, its orientation, how much glass it has, and how the space is laid out. A contractor who works these installs regularly sizes to what the structure actually demands.

Electrical panels in houses built for an earlier generation of cooling equipment were sized to match it. Half the homes in Andrews County, Texas were built in 1983 or earlier (2020-2024 ACS 5-year). A mini-split draws differently than what those panels were designed around, and a contractor installing one here has to check the service capacity before anything else on the job moves forward. If the panel cannot carry the load, that work comes before the unit goes in, and it is a separate cost the quote has to reflect.

The Parts of a Mini-Split System and Where Each One Goes

Isometric illustration of a cutaway house with a dark shingled gable roof, showing interior rooms with a bed, chairs and table, three wall-mounted mini-split indoor units connected by line sets to an outdoor condenser unit on a pad outside.

The indoor air handler mounts high on an interior wall inside the room being conditioned. It pulls in room air, moves it across the coil inside, and pushes the treated air back out. Most installations use one handler per zone, though larger homes may have several, each tied back to the outdoor unit.

The outdoor condenser unit sits on a pad or bracket outside the home, typically against an exterior wall. A refrigerant line set runs through a small penetration in the wall to connect the two units, and a condensate drain line carries moisture from the indoor handler to the outside.

The drawing shows a typical layout, and a licensed contractor determines exactly how each component is positioned and routed for your specific home.
